B&B, Bed & Breakfast – This is usually an owner-occupied establishment that was formerly a single family home. Renovated Victorian style homes are particularly popular for this business. Typically there are 4-5 uniquely furnished bedrooms that may or may not include private bathrooms. Breakfast is included in the room rate, hence the label “B&B”.

Country Inn - Very much like the B&B, described above, but with more rooms, and often housed in a facility built specifically for this purpose. It may or may not be located in a rural area but with the addition of serving meals in addition to breakfast. They may have up to 30 rooms as well as restaurant facilities.

Cottage/Cabin - A detached building affording privacy and seclusion to guests, with the owner available, but providing minimal services. Breakfast is either delivered to the room, taken with others in a central dining room or placed prior to arrival.

Boutique Hotel – 30 or more room historic or designer hotels that adhere more to the sensibilities of the B&B industry than to the typical modern hotel. They are much more personal than a regular hotel and yet provide most of the same amenities.

Hotel – Commercial properties individually owned or part of a franchise or national chain. More uniform décor and amenities, such as in-room phones, TV, private bathroom, etc. can be expected, as well as a more flexible reservation/cancellation policy. Families with smaller children are often well suited to these properties, as there are often additional activities onsite or nearby, such as swimming pools and exercise facilities.

Conference/Retreat Center - similar to a large hotel, but usually with fewer amenities and geared toward large groups.

Camp/Ranch - A cross between Cabins and Retreat Centers, these can vary greatly in terms of the facilities, from campsites for tents, to group housing or even hotel-type facilities. Can be suited for groups and outdoor activities. Be sure to visit their website, or call and inquire.

Vacation Rental/Condo – Timeshare properties, apartments or condominiums that have been made available for use at discounted prices.
